On this page we are going to discuss how to obtain a Canadian Work Visa. I am going to go through two different processes. The first will be to obtain a temporary working visa, whilst the second will involve the intention of a permanent move to Canada to find work. It is worth noting that both processes are quite complex. I am only going to go over an outline of the process on this page. If you wish to apply for a Canadian Work Visa then you should always talk to an immigration lawyer.
Let’s start by discussing temporary work visas as these are arguably the easiest to obtain. The majority of the work will be carried out by your potential employer. They will need to complete a document known as the ‘Labour Market Impact Assessment’. This basically lets the employer hire temporary foreign workers. This is not the whole process though. You will also need to be able to qualify for a visitor visa, something which should be fairly easy to do so if you have no criminal history and own a passport. There will be an end date to this type of visa but it is likely that you will be able to renew it providing you do not get into any ‘trouble’ whilst living in Canada.
The second process is for a permanent working visa. The process takes about six months in most cases (providing you meet the entry requirements). It is worth noting that this process does not apply to Quebec. If you are intending on living in Quebec then you must talk to an immigration lawyer as the process is different.
At the start you will need to demonstrate that you speak either English or French with a great deal of fluency. Those that speak both languages fluently stand a much better chance of being approved for immigration.
Only a few people will actually be approved for permanent working visas in Canada. It is not decided on a ‘case by case’ basis either. The idea is that you will submit various details online (educational and work experience), and you will be ranked against other people who are also in the same ‘pool’ as you. Only the highest ranking people will be invited to come to work in Canada permanently.
The main focus will be on your work experience and education. It is ideal if you have experience in a skilled position that Canada is in need of at the moment (this changes fairly regularly and differs from location to location). You will however also be ranked on the amount of money that you have. After all; the Canadian government does not want you to move to the country only to have to claim social benefits later on down the line. Other factors may also come into play, but these are currently the main ranking techniques utilized when it is determined whether somebody is able to claim a permanent working visa in Canada or not.
